One of the dreamiest and most fabulous sights in Italy opens before our eyes in this Tuscan city. A prestigious artistic centre and a university city, Pisa is known all over the world for its Piazza dei Miracoli, selected by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. The four monuments in the square are the tangible sign of man’s genius and talent: the Baptistery, the Cemetery, the Cathedral and the Bell Tower, better known as the “Leaning Tower”, the symbol of Pisa in the world.
The fame of the Leaning Tower is far greater than that of the city, which is full of invaluable artistic and natural sights. As you walk through its streets, you will discover the riverbanks, picturesque squares and impressive palaces, which often house extremely valuable works of art.
In addition, of course, to a tour of Piazza dei Miracoli, we recommend the following excursions:
The Charterhouse of Calci is one of the largest monasteries in Tuscany, a few kilometres from Pisa, at the foot of Monte Pisano. It was founded in 1366, and in the seventeenth century it was largely extended in the Baroque style, its Baroque frescoes, among the most important in Tuscany, still in place. Today, the Charterhouse houses the National Museum and the Museum of Natural and Local Science of the University of Pisa.
The Museum of San Matteo, opening on the riverbank known as Lungarno Mediceo, is definitely worth a visit: it contains works and archaeological findings of exceptional value and paintings by such artists as Masaccio, Donatello, Beato Angelico.
The Church of Santa Caterina, built between 1250 and 1300 by the Dominican friars, with the façade in the unique local style or stile Pisano, the marble dossal attributed to Donatello, the shrine of bishop Simone Saltarelli and a group of sculptures by Pisano.
The Sangallo Bulwark, what remains of the Cittadella Nuova, the fortress built by the Florentine people, and the quaint neighbourhood of Kinzica, where Arab and Jewish merchants used to live.
Not to mention the many lovely Romanesque and Gothic churches, such as S. Maria della Spina and S. Paolo a Ripa d'Arno.Because of the strategic location of Pisa, it is an ideal starting place to visit some of the finest cities in Tuscany or actually in Italy.
First and foremost, Florence, with its great concentration of works of art and monuments, or Siena, with its centuries-old traditions, Lucca or even Montecatini Terme, a world-known spa resort.
